Distracted driving was the largest economic cost contributor to crashes in the U.S. in 2021 at 30%. The next leading factor was drunk driving at 20%.
Yet it receives far less prioritization, enforcement, and funding as other serious road safety threats.
2021, distracted driving had an economic and societal cost $158 Billion in the U.S. This cost includes medical care, lost productivity, and reduced quality of life. It does not account for grief, trauma, or the lifelong impact on families.

In May of 2024, 110 families impacted by all types of road crashes, both survivors and those who lost loved ones, joined together to make their voices heard in Washington, DC.
They shared their stories with members of Congress and DOT and NHTSA officials. The goal - to make road safety a national priority in the US and prevent other families from experiencing the same tragedies.
